President Akufo-Addo has broken his silence on the recent agitations within the Volta Region by separatists seeking to secede from Ghana.

The secessionists referred to as the Western Togoland Restoration Front have orchestrated two separate incidents within the region. Which recently, led to the death of a minimum of one individual and damage to property.

The President has affirmed his trust within the country’s security forces. He has assured that the matter is being handled with the utmost urgency. “Institutions are in place, the safety agencies do their work, they’ve started already and we’ll see results.

What’s happening within the Volta Region is simply by a couple of individuals. These secessionists. we’ll affect them. I even have a little question about it,” the President said in an interview on Wednesday.

Many institutions including the National House of Chiefs, and political parties among others condemned the group’s activities.

However, some members of the general public have criticised what they assert is that the conspicuous silence of the President on the event calling for a public pronouncement on the nation’s strategy to handle the menace.

Speaking on Kumasi-based Hello FM, Mr. Akufo-Addo said he has hesitated in commenting on the matter so as to make sure that the country doesn’t panic within the face of the riots.

“If I panic, the country panics…There is not any value for the country if I start making hysterical statements,” he said. “That’s not the aim of leadership.

Additionally, the President trusts, public statements by him on things within the North Tongu district won’t resolve the matter, especially as he trusts the nation’s security apparatus to crack down on the activities of the separatists.

He explained: “When the proper measures are put in place, you cannot be complacent. Though, a minimum of you’ll be firm and face what’s coming. I trust the safety agencies and their leadership.

He added that ”

He added that “the security agencies do their work to ensure that this matter is addressed as quickly as possible.”. They need starting already and that we will see results.”

President Akufo-Addo argued that the routine of the secessionist group is currently being investigated by the safety agencies to make sure that the ‘element of surprise’ that has thus far worked in their favour is eliminated.

“The element of surprise is there at the start for terrorist groups. You’ll not be surprised when the system is functioning. The third…fourth or fifth time won’t be that easy.”
